I've got a full screen graphic that I'd like to display until someone presses the button to begin shots and then have live view switch on when the shots begin.

Is this even possible? From what I've learned of PSRemote, it's like all-or-nothing with the live view option, correct?

It's a bit of a hack, but you could do it by selecting the auto reconnect option from the Camera menu and then turn the camera off when not in use and it will display the camera_not_connected.jpg image. There would be a short delay when you turn the camera back on while the software reconnects and then displays the ready.jpg image and live view.
