View Full Version : Linear RAW development doesn't use full dynamic range of file

I am using Breeze Browser to develop RAW files from a Digital Rebel (12-bits per channel). I need to develop them linearly for use in a computer vision program.

I noticed today that when I develop a RAW file with some blown highlights to a 8-bit file, the highlights do not reach a level of 255 but only about 220. This appears to be independent of the file format I'm converting to. I don't understand why. Note that I am not doing any post processing. Can someone explain?

It's not the end of the world, since I'm really only loosing about 30 levels, but I'm just curious what the cause might be, and how to fix it if possible.

Thanks,

Nathan

It may just be the way the 12-bit linear data is expanded to 16-bits. You could try setting auto levels in the post-processing settings to make full use of the range before it is converted back to 8-bit.

Thanks - yeah that makes sense.

I'm learning new things about raw files every day now it seems...
